I am a maker at heart…

Rooted in the rich traditions of Western North Carolina, my work is a tribute to the enduring spirit of Catawba Valley pottery—where heritage, place, and artistry converge. Growing up, our Sunday table, dressed in a freshly ironed linen cloth and cherished china, always featured Grandma Margaret’s pies served in delicately fluted Seagrove stoneware. Those vessels, holding her culinary masterpieces, became symbols of love and connection—memories that continue to inspire me today.

Each time I shape clay, I feel the presence of those who came before me. North Carolina pottery has been woven into the fabric of my life. Today, living in a community that values this art form, I am grateful for the opportunity to create pieces that will become part of new stories and family traditions.

I work primarily with wild local clays, including the legendary James Bottom Clay—revived through the efforts of our local pottery community and shared with me by Preston Tolbert. This historically significant material, once used by master potters like Burlon Craig, adds depth and meaning to my work. Using sustainably harvested clay reflects my respect for the land and its history, ensuring that each piece carries forward a legacy of craftsmanship and care.

My process combines tradition with personal expression. The final stage—soda firing—is a magical transformation. Flames and soda dance across the surface, leaving behind unpredictable blushes, bold flashes, and textures only fire can create. No two pieces are alike; each emerges from the kiln with its own story, shaped by time, fire, and tradition.

Every vessel I make is more than functional—it is an heirloom in the making, crafted to be cherished, passed down, and remembered. When someone holds one of my pots, I hope they feel the passion and dedication behind it—and that they create memories of their own, just as I did around the Sunday table all those years ago.
