Growing up in North Carolina, surrounded by the rich history and tradition of pottery-making, I am inspired by the legacy of those before me. Our Sunday table was adorned with a freshly ironed linen tablecloth and cherished china. A staple for every family gathering, Grandma Margaret's delectable pies were always in delicately fluted Seagrove stoneware.
These memories serve as a driving force in my work today. Those pie plates that once held Grandma Margaret's culinary masterpieces are a constant reminder of her love. Each time I shape clay into a vessel, I feel a connection to my family's history. From the practicality of butter churns to the rustic charm of whiskey jugs, North Carolina pottery has been woven into the fabric of my life.
As I continue to create pottery today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share my craft with others. Living in Catawba County, surrounded by a community that appreciates and values the art of pottery, is truly a blessing. It brings me joy to know that my work has the power to create new memories for those who bring my pieces into their homes.
I prefer using local wild NC clays and strive to capture the essence of the past while infusing it with my own artistic flair. The textures created through stamping, sprigs, and carvings add depth and character to my work, drawing the eye and evoking a sense of curiosity.
The final step, usually gas soda firing, is a magical transformation. The flames and soda lick at the surface of the pottery, dancing and leaving behind unpredictable glaze patterns. Each piece emerges from the kiln with its own story to tell, a testament to the alchemy that occurs within. It is a labor of love, a culmination of hours spent honing my craft and pouring my joy into each creation.
As I continue my journey as a potter, I am humbled by the opportunity to carry on the tradition and legacy of North Carolina pottery. Every time someone holds one of my pieces, I hope they can sense the passion and dedication that went into its creation. But more importantly, I hope they make memories of their own, just as I did around the Sunday table all those years ago.
